Trump administration seeks Cuban allies to end Communist rule

(MENAFN) Following the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the Trump administration is now turning its attention to Cuba, seeking potential allies within the Cuban government to help negotiate an end to Communist rule before the year ends, as stated by reports.

US officials consider Cuba’s economy fragile and believe the government is particularly exposed after losing key support from Venezuela. While there is no detailed blueprint for toppling the regime, the capture of Maduro and subsequent concessions are seen as both an example and a warning for Havana.

“I strongly suggest they make a deal. Before it's too late,” US President Donald Trump wrote on social media on Jan. 11, adding that “no more oil or money” will flow to Cuba.

Officials have consulted Cuban exile groups in Miami and Washington to identify insiders who might be willing to negotiate, according to reports. The Maduro operation reportedly involved assistance from an insider, and a US military raid in Caracas killed dozens of Cuban personnel protecting him.

Although Washington has not directly threatened Cuba with military action, the Venezuela raid was interpreted as a warning of the potential consequences of resisting US pressure.

Intelligence assessments portray Cuba’s economy as strained, with shortages in goods, medicine, and electricity. Plans include further weakening the Cuban government by cutting Venezuelan oil supplies and targeting Cuba’s overseas medical missions, its primary source of foreign currency.
